What is IPL? And what can it treat?
IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light. Unlike laser, it emits a broad spectrum of polychromatic light. IPL is non-coherent and travels in multiple directions which means it can cover larger treatment areas than laser. IPL utilises selective photothermolysis, where light energy is absorbs by different targets of the skin, such as melanin, hemoglobin and water, and is transferred into heat which selectively destroys the target while minimising damage to the surrounding tissue. By filtering out certain wavelengths with filters, IPL can treat a broad range of different skin conditions. IPL is limited to lighter skin tones. See below for what we can treat at Velvet Hair Removal.

Freckles (Ephiledes)
Get rid of those dreaded freckles. After treatment the freckles will appear darker for a week or two until they come to the surface of the skin and flake away. Notice a difference after one treatment but get rid of most with multiple treatments.
Solar Lentigines
These pigmented spots are common to sun-exposed skin. Multiple IPL treatments can eliminate these spots on lighter skin tones. Fitzpatrick tones 1-3.

Photo-Rejuvenation
Photo-rejuvenation targets the water in the dermis. It heats up the collagen fibres which leads to contracture which promotes textural changes in the skin. Basically it leaves your skin looking smoother and healthier. Notice a difference after one treatment.
Vascular
Certain vascular conditions can be treated with IPL. Get rid of those unsightly veins, or treat conditions such as Rosacea, Poikiloderma and cherry angioma’s. Rosacea will depend on severity and will require long-term maintenance.

Acne
IPL targets porphyrins produced by C. acnes bacteria, generating oxygen which destroys the bacteria and reduces inflammation. 6-8+ treatments will be required and will likely require other changes to reduce the root cause of the acne.
